Your letters: Taxi taxation

D

ear taxi driver demonstrators,

I understand that it is painful that your business model is not as effective as it used to be and people are increasingly opting for alternatives. However, did you ever ask yourselves why people are looking elsewhere? Instead of blaming others for your problems, maybe analyze why you seem less attractive to so many and improve your product.

I love Uber because it is convenient. The cars are always clean and readily available. A lot of taxis here are outright filthy. I have never come across an Uber or GrabCar driver who burps and stinks and farts. Small change is never an issue, and you get to rate the service in the end. When I call a car I can monitor where it is and estimate the arrival time, which is very important in a traffic-choked city such as Jakarta. I can even communicate with the driver before he arrives. I have never had an unpleasant experience. Even if their service were more expensive than yours, I would still go for it.

Unless you can improve your ways you will lose. This is called progress and healthy competition. So stop blaming others and start improving. Good luck.
