AKARTA: South Jakarta Police uncovered child exploitation practices on Wednesday after arresting two women identified only as I and NH, who work as passengers-for-hire, locally known as jokis.
The case unfolded after two months of investigation into the two suspects, who were in charge of three children aged between 5 and 6. The police suspect that one of the children is the child of one of the perpetrators.
The children were each rented out for Rp 200,000 (US$15) per day and forced to beg on the city's crossroads.
'Those children are forced to beg. If they don't obey, they are beaten,' South Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Wahyu Hadiningrat said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Friday.
He added that the children were forced to work from morning until dusk.
I and NH will face multiple charges of violating the Human Trafficking Law and the Child Protection Law. The two women could face a maximum sentence of 15 years behind bars.
