AKARTA: Legendary keroncong singer Waldjinah, 70, was named a maestro by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo after the veteran’s concert Keroncong Pesona Indonesia in Central Jakarta on Friday.
“Bu Waldjinah, thank you for your total dedication to reserving Indonesian culture,” Jokowi posted on his personal Twitter account, alongside a photo of him handing a flowers and an envelope as a tanda tresno (a sign of appreciation), to Waldjinah, who was wheeled on stage.
Waldjinah, famous for her songs “Walang Kekek” (Grasshoppers) and “Entit”, has collaborated with many younger musicians of different genres. Friday’s concert was held at Graha Bhakti Budaya in Taman Ismail Marzuki arts center.
