A gas explosion injured 13 people in Gandaria City Mall in South Jakarta on Thursday morning.
The blast took place at a vacant space beside the Cupbob restaurant on the lower ground level of the mall at 10 a.m, Jakarta Police spokesman Sr.Cmr. Awi Setiyono said.
A security officer named Syafrudin who was on patrol in the morning smelled gas from the location and reported to the safety team of the mall management. As staff from the safety team approached the location, the blast occurred. There were around seven people working inside the restaurant when the incident took place, Awi said.
The 13 victims suffered burn injuries in the blast, comprising one female and 12 males, he added.
South Jakarta Police chief Sr. Cmr. Tubagus Ade Hidayat said seven of the victims suffered serious injuries.
The victims have been provisionally identified as Maryanto, Udin, Khoirul Umar, Budi, Zaint, Ferry, Udin, Erwin, Lestari, Sholikul, Wiatmoko, Warsito and Winarso. (rin)
