T

he Central Java Police will deploy 3,800 officers to guard Buddhist celebrations for Waisak Day on Saturday, which will be centered at the iconic Borobudur Temple in Magelang, Central Java.

Aside from mobile brigade personnel, counterterrorism officers from Densus 88 will also be deployed.

“Personnel will be on guard from Friday until Monday. It’s one of the most important events of the year,” Central Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Condro Kirono said on Friday.

Vice President Jusuf Kalla is slated to attend the event late on Saturday.

The police have also cleared nearby night entertainment spots and street vendors to ensure order during the annual event.

Meanwhile, dozens of Buddhist monks have prepared for the ritual by collecting holy water from Umbul Jumprit River in Temanggung, Central Java.

The water will be transported to Borobudur for the Waisak celebration that will culminate early on Sunday.

The celebration will also be attended by 13 Buddhist monks from Thailand.
