ome parts of an old skyscraper in Bintaro, South Tangerang, Banten, collapsed on Thursday afternoon causing clouds of dust in the surrounding area.
The 17-story building, located near the Bintaro Trade Center in sector seven of Bintaro, saw its front parts collapse, South Tangerang Police chief Sr. Cmr. Ayi Supardan said on Thursday.
"It is the Panin Bintaro building. The construction was started in 1995, established by Jaya Property," he said as quoted by kompas.com.
The construction project stalled due to Indonesia's monetary crisis in 1998, Ayi explained, adding that Panin bought the building while Jaya Property acted as the developer.
However, during the construction process, the building did not pass the worthiness test due to several factors, leading to a halt in construction.
At least 15 workers started tearing apart some parts of the building on May 1, Ayi said. On Thursday, while the workers were taking a break, the building collapsed.
No casualties have been reported. (rin)
