akarta's 489th anniversary later this month is set to witness the groundbreaking of a Rp 4.4 trillion (US$352 million) transportation project, the light rail transit (LRT) system.

City-owned construction firm PT Jakarta Propertindo planned to officially break ground on the project on June 22, president director Satya Heragandhi said on Tuesday.

The firm has started to build depots in Pulomas, North Jakarta, as part of the preparation work.

Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama is scheduled to participate in the groundbreaking event.

The first phase of the LRT construction spans 6 kilometers from Kelapa Gading in North Jakarta to Velodrome in East Jakarta, Satya said, as reported by kompas.com.

The city is banking on the LRT to support public transportation in the capital during the Asian Games 2018, an international sporting event held in Jakarta and Palembang.

The routes will pass several venues and supporting facilities of the Asian Games, such as the Velodrome in Rawamangun, a horse racing track in Pulomas, a depot in Kelapa Gading and the athletes village complex in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.

Meanwhile, Jakarta's $1.7 billion mega project Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) is also underway and slated to be completed by 2018. (rin)
