S-based streaming service Yonder Music’s CEO, Adam Kidron, said on Tuesday that Indonesian dangdut music could enter the international arena.
The US-based music producer promoted Indonesian dangdut singer Cita Citata for a concert in Ipoh, Malaysia, early this month. He said Cita received a warm welcome from Malaysians who knew the music.
"There are similarities with reggaeton from Puerto Rico and many dangdut DJs are playing reggaeton tracks," Kidron told The Jakarta Post.
The popularity of reggaeton had spread to the Spanish-speaking community, he said.
The music made a breakthrough in the US and European markets in 2004, with artists such as Tego Calderón, Daddy Yankee and Héctor and Tito, he explained.
"Despite Americans thinking that their music is the world music, there are also markets for Latins and African-Americans," Kidron said, adding that communities in other regions could listen to dangdut as they were familiar with reggaeton. (dan)
