he city administration will start on Monday to penalize private vehicles caught using Transjakarta bus lanes across the capital in an effort to encourage motorists to shift to public transportation and to provide the city with emergency evacuation routes.
Beside Tranajakarta buses, other vehicles allowed use the lanes include ambulances, fire trucks and ministerial vehicles with RI license plates.
Traffic police say they will ticket bus lane intruders.
Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama told police officers to start issuing traffic violators with blue tickets, so that they could directly pay the fines at banks, instead of undergoing a trial.
“Don’t use red tickets, so the violators do not need to face brief court hearings [for minor crimes],” Ahok said as quoted by kompas.com on Monday.
PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta) head Budi Kaliwono said the policy to clear bus lanes of private vehicles was aimed at providing the city with emergency evacuation routes, particularly for ambulances and fire trucks so that they could assist immediately when accidents occurred.
“Traffic congestion is worsening in the city, while we have no emergency evacuation routes. So the policy does not only to encourage people to shift to Transjakarta buses, but also provides emergency lanes,” Budi added. (bbn)
