he Central Jakarta District Court will kick off the trial of the high-profile Wayan Mirna Salihin murder case on Wednesday with sole suspect Jessica Kumala Wongso.
The main agenda item for the Wednesday hearing is prosecutors’ indictment against Jessica, who has been accused of premeditated murder and faces a maximum punishment of the death penalty.
Andi Joesoef, one of Jessica’s lawyers, said he was ready to defend his client, who he believed was innocent.
“We are ready. We have been informed that the hearing will start at 11 a.m. on Wednesday,” Andi said as quoted by kompas.com on Tuesday, adding that the team of lawyers had received a copy of the indictment on Monday.
The case has been in the spotlight for months after a lengthy police investigation. Prosecutors return the case dossier four times to the police, asking for improvements, before accepting only two days before Jessica’s 120-day detention period was due to expire.
During the investigation, the police cooperated with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) to obtain information about Jessica and Mirna’s time living in the country.
Mirna died after drinking a cyanide-laced iced coffee at a cafe in Central Jakarta with Jessica and another friend on Jan. 6. (bbn)
