he government has ultimately taken over the 10-year-old Cimanggis-Cibitung toll road project in West Java, which only has a 0.7-percent completion progress because of land acquisition problems.
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo urged the state-owned contractor Waskita Karya to immediately complete the Rp 8.7 trillion (US$656 million) toll road project, which was targeted to finish at the end of 2018.
"This is one project in the country that has stalled since 2006. Hence, we are taking it over from its previous investor and now Waskita Karya will work on it and proceed with the land acquisition process," he said during his working visit to the toll-road section 1 construction site in Cimanggis on Tuesday.
The toll road is expected to solve daily congestion in the mornings and afternoons because of commuters traveling between the capital and its satellite cities. "It will solve logistical and goods distribution problems, as well as transportation," he added.
Waskita president director Herwidiakto said land issues had been the main problem in the project. From the total two sections of the toll road, only 4.7 percent of the first section had been completed.
He believed the company would meet the completion target as long as land issues could be solved this year. The publicly listed company has allocated Rp 1.5 trillion in cash for the land acquisition process. (ags)
