akarta Police arrested four suspects who allegedly stole the data of credit card customers from various private banks and used it to withdraw money. The suspects have reportedly been operating since 2014.
“So far 1,600 customers are known to have been victims and most likely the number could be much higher,” Jakarta Police chief of detectives Sr. Comr. Fadil Imran said on Wednesday.
The suspects have only been indentified by their initials GS, A, AH and PSS. A and AH, who work as outsourced staff for private banks, were allegedly supposed to collect data from credit card applicants. Meanwhile, PSS was suspected of changing the cell phone data belonging to the applicants at cell phone provider centers using fake IDs allegedly provided by the group coordinator, GS.
Police have yet to calculate how much money was stolen, Fadil said. Police are awaiting the results of an audit by the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center to track several suspicious accounts being used by the suspects.
"Based on our initial estimate, the suspects at least stole Rp 5 billion (US$376,790) from the credit card customers,” Fadil said as quoted by kompas.com.
From the suspects, police claim to have seized two laptops, 16 cell phones, seven fake IDs, two copies of fake IDs, five SIM cards and ATM cards from various banks. (dmr)
