T

he Golkar Party has officially declared its support for Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election. The party expressed its support for the incumbent in a letter handed over to Ahok on Friday.

The decision to back Ahok was based on a recommendation from the Golkar Party’s Jakarta executive board, Golkar chairman Setya Novanto explained during an event on Friday morning attended by Ahok, who had earlier secured support from two other political parties – NasDem and Hanura.

“This decision was reached after a long process. We hope that Ahok will win the gubernatorial election next year,” Setya said.

During the event, Golkar’s Jakarta chapter chairman Fayakhun Andriadi handed over a letter of support, which had been demanded by the governor’s volunteer support group, Teman Ahok (Friends of Ahok).

He stressed that the pledge of support came with no preconditions, adding that it was up to Ahok to decide whether to run as an independent candidate or be nominated by the three political parties.

“The City Council factions are ready to save Ahok’s working program. I only request one thing from Ahok: Succeed in fixing Jakarta!” Fayakhun said.

Ahok thanked Golkar and promised not to disappoint the party. (bbn)
