ritish Ambassador to Indonesia Moazzam Malik has insisted that the UK's decision to leave the EU will not affect the bilateral relationship between his country and Indonesia.
"Responding to Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi's statement, we [UK and Indonesia] will continue the hard work," Malik said at the British Embassy in Jakarta on Saturday.
UK Prime Minister David Cameron is to stand down in the coming months, at which point negotiations over Britain's withdrawal from the bloc will begin.
In an HM Treasury service report, it is mentioned that UK will have to apply Article 50 of the Treaty of the European Union regarding the exit and renegotiate its trade relationship with EU members first. Then it will renegotiate with the rest of the world, including 50 countries that have trade agreements with the EU.
"We will still be members of the G20, G7, UN Security Council, and NATO. We are also the only country in the world that has committed 2 percent of GDP for the military and 0.7 percent for development aid," Malik noted.
In April, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo visited the UK, clinching seven MoUs in fields such as education, research and innovation, defense, the creative industry and maritime affairs. Malik guarantee there would be no change in the MoU implementation. (bbn)
