olice have arrested seven members of Jakmania, the supporters’ association of Jakarta-based soccer club Persija, in Angke and Grogol, both in West Jakarta, and Bogor and Bekasi, both in West Java, for injuring six police officers during violent chaos following a match on Friday evening.

“Police arrested a suspect initialled J in Bekasi and five suspects with initials NR, R, I, S and A in Angke and Bogor on Saturday night, while AF, another suspect, was arrested on Sunday morning in Grogol,” Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Awi Setiyono said on Sunday.

According to Awi, J was arrested on torture charges after allegedly beating a policeman, while the other suspects were arrested on hate speech charges.

“The six suspects are alleged to have incited a riot at Gate 7 of Gelora Bung Karno stadium in Central Jakarta,” he said.

The suspects may be charged under Article 45 of Law 11/2008 on electronic information and transaction, which carries a maximum penalty of six years in prison or a fine of Rp 1 billion (US$ 67,072), Awi said.

On Friday night, a soccer match at GBK stadium between Persija and Sriwijaya FC, a club from Palembang in South Sumatra, was stopped by the referee 10 minutes before the final whistle, a Jakmania member having run onto the pitch after Sriwijaya FC’s Hilton Moreira scored a goal.
