housands of Jakarta’s civil servants did not show up for work Monday after week-long Idul Fitri celebrations. The absent civil servants ignored a warning from Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, who said their allowances would be cut if they missed work on Monday.
Based on the monitoring of 39,913 civil servants, 6,072 failed to appear for work on Monday, while 1,733 showed up late, said Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat said on Monday.
The figure might be higher because 140 employee time clock machines were offline on Monday.
Djarot was tasked by the governor to lead the monitoring activities of officers under the city administration on Monday.
“Because of the offline machines, we are not sure of the exact number of employees who didn’t go to work today. We should investigate further to assess why so many machines were offline,” Djarot said at City Hall.
Learning from the experience, the city administration plans to task certain people to maintain the time clock machines to make sure they are functional, Djarot added.
Djarot promised to sanction absent employees in various ways, including by cutting their allowances, demotion or dismissal as stipulated in a gubernatorial decree. (bbn)
