en-year-old Arya Permana, whose struggle with severe obesity saw him shoot to national fame, started his crash diet program at the Hasan Sadikit Hospital in Bandung, West Java, on Tuesday after being admitted to the hospital for treatment on Monday.

Arya who is 147-centimeters tall now weighs 188 kilograms, after shedding 2 kilograms during his first night in the hospital, his father Ade Somantri, 40, told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday. Arya had to fast on Monday evening before having blood samples taken on Tuesday morning.

Ade, accompanied by his wife Rokayah, 34, let the team of doctors decide the program that best suited his son. He said he realized that the right meals would help Arya’s treatment.

"He eats rice three times a day but more fiber with adjusted calories in each meal," said the security officer in Kerawang regency about the diet program doctors have put Arya on.

A team of 13 doctors of various specialties have been assigned for Arya's treatment. The doctors also asked Ade and Rokayah to encourage their son to do more activities. During his stay in the hospital, Arya is required to walk around his room.

"He walked 40 meters today in one round. Tomorrow he must walk three times," Ade said adding that one of the reasons Arya was admitted to hospital was due to suffocation he suffered every time he walked.

President director of Hasan Sadikin Hospital Ayi Djembarsari said that Arya was four times the normal weight of a child in his age, and that the case was an interesting one for medical practitioners. (rin)
