tate-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II (AP II) will soon start reinforcement works at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten so that the facility can accommodate larger airplanes.
The project will start in August or September and is expected to be completed within one year, AP 2 Interim President Director Djoko Murjatmodjo said in Jakarta on Wednesday.
The company is also in the process of acquiring land for the third runway of Soekarno-Hatta airport, which is among the busiest airports in the words, Djoko added.
“The construction will be finished after 1.5 years and will be able to accommodate 86 plane movements per hour compared to 72 now,” he said at the press conference at the airport’s Terminal 3 on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Garuda Indonesia welcomed the reinforcement project, saying that when it was complete, large Garuda aircraft would not need to transit in Singapore for flights to Europe.
Garuda Service Director Nicodemus Lampe said that Boeing 777-300ERs with a full tank currently had to refuel in Singapore before continuing on to London or Amsterdam as the Soekarno-Hatta runway was not strong enough to support them. (bbn)
