S

tate vocational school SMKN 2 Makassar in South Sulawesi has officially expelled a 15-year-old male student who was named a suspect in a case involving the assault of a teacher, a school official said on Saturday.

The decision to expel the student was taken during a meeting of the teachers' council and the students' council, SMKN 2 Makassar's headmaster Chaidir Madja said.

"The meeting decided to return [the student] to his parents because we could no longer teach him," he said.

Makassar Police had detained and named the student and his 42-year-old father suspects for allegedly beating a teacher named Dasrul, 52. However, the decision to expel the student was not taken merely over the assault case, Chaidir said, adding that the sophomore student had also violated other school regulations.

Another consideration was the school feared if the student returned to the school, he would be the target of his friends' anger.

"His safety and future are at risk. So it is better if he studies in a different school," Chaidir said.

Makassar Police chief Sr. Cmr. Rusdi Hartono said his force took over the case from the Tamalate Police after it gained national attention. Furthermore, the Makassar Police wanted the case because the suspect was still underage. Since his psychological state must be taken into consideration, under the authority of the Makassar Police, he would be accompanied by personnel from the Women and Children Protection Division.

Despite taken into custody, police are conducting mediation because of child protection issues. (rin)
