A

police officer was found dead with severe wounds on his head and neck on Kuta Beach, on the resort island of Bali, at 3 a.m. on Wednesday. He was allegedly beaten to death by a group of tourists.

The police officer, identified as Kuta Police traffic unit officer First Adj.Insp Wayan Sudarsa, was found lying on the beach in front of the Pullman hotel by a hotel security guard and a local pecalang (Balinese traditional guard). He was wearing a police uniform. His walkie-talkie was found next to him, while his police cap was spotted 20 meters away from his body.

Police investigators discovered many broken beer bottles around the scene that were allegedly used to beat Sudarsa. They also found a broken surf board and a leather handbag near the body.

As of Wednesday evening, police have yet to name a suspect in the case.

Bali Police chief Insp. Gen. Sugeng Priyanto said an investigation was under way, adding that police had questioned two hotel security guards and a pecalang member. (dmr)
