A

bus owned by PMH running from Pekanbaru in Riau to Medan in North Sumatra hit the Nurul Yaqin mosque in Labuhanbatu Selatan regency Thursday, killing two.

The accident in Asam Jawa village in Torgamba district, Labuhanbatu Selatan, North Sumatra, happened at 4:20 p.m. and also injured about a dozen people. They are being treated at the Kota Pinang Hospital in the regency.

The fatalities have been identified as Pintu Pintu, 67, a resident of Simalungun regency in North Sumatra and Kalpino Afandi, 4, a resident of Labuhan Batu Selatan regency.

North Sumatra Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Rina Sari Ginting said the accident began when the speeding bus had a near miss with a truck carrying vegetables coming from the opposite direction. The near miss caused the bus driver to lose control and swerve into the front of the mosque.

“… [The impact] was quite hard, the mosque almost collapsed. Half of the bus was in the mosque,” Rina said. The mosque was empty when the accident occurred.

Rina added that the driver of the bus had been detained. (evi)
