undreds of University of Indonesia (UI) students on Tuesday staged a protest in front of the Office of the Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister to protest the government’s plan to continue the reclamation of islet G in Jakarta Bay as stated by Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Luhut Pandjaitan last Friday.

On Tuesday, Luhut planned to meet with Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama to officially announce the decision to resume the reclamation project. The project was halted by Luhut’s predecessor, Rizal Ramli, in June.

"We, the students of UI, reject the reclamation project,” said Arya Ardiansyah, the chairman of UI’s student executive body.

The Jakarta State Administrative Court decided to revoke the islet G reclamation permit on May 31, Arya said, adding that if the government decides to continue with the project, it might constitute an unlawful act.

"We question Luhut's authority to resume the reclamation project, especially after the court ordered a moratorium on Islet G," he said.

Arya added that the project had negatively affected the income and welfare of the fishermen who live near the coast. "We want Luhut to meet with students and fishermen so he can listen to our concerns. Even if we have to go to the President, we will come to him to state our concerns," Arya said. (bbn)
