he Wamena Airport will resume normal activities on Wednesday, as the body of a cargo plane that skidded off its runway on Tuesday has been removed from the incident’s site, an airport official has said.
Airport head Rasburhani said the aircraft had been removed from the airport’s runway at around 4:30 p.m. local time. “We are cleaning the location of the incident. Hopefully, the airport can operate normally tomorrow,” he told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.
The incident occurred when a cargo aircraft belonging to airline company PT Trigana Air Service was to land at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Authorities closed the airport, causing cancellations of several flights.
Rasburhani said that as of Tuesday afternoon; only Twin Otter-type aircraft could land at the airport because only 1,500 meters of the runway remained open after the incident. “The two aircraft that landed after the incident were Twin Otter aircraft belonging to Trigana Air and a Pilatus aircraft owned by Associated Mission Aviation (AMA),” he said.
Rasburhani said 13 flights scheduled to land at the airport on Tuesday were canceled due to the closure. They were passenger aircraft belonging to Trigana Air, Wings Air, Express Air, Jayawijaya Dirgantara, Tri MG Intra Asia Airlines, My Indo Airlines, Deraya Air, AMA, Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF), Susi Air, Dimoni Air, Ersa Air and Yajasi Air.
The Trigana Air plane carrying 14,913 tons of fuel departed from Sentani Airport in Jayapura. The aircraft was piloted by Capt. Jatmiko and co-pilot Joshua, with a technician identified only as Iwan on board. No one was injured in the incident. (ebf)
