AKARTA: The government is planning to introduce new banknote designs that will include new portraits of national heroes, according to information published on the Cabinet Secretary’s website on Wednesday.
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo signed a presidential decree (Keppres) on Sept. 5 that lays the foundation for the new designs. The changes will affect the Rp 50,000 (US$3.8), Rp 20,000, Rp 10,000, Rp 5,000, Rp 2,000 and Rp 1,000 banknotes.
For instance, the portrait of Colonel I Gusti Ngurah Rai will be replaced by Djuanda Kartawidjaja on the Rp 50,000 banknote. Meanwhile, the portrait of Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II of the Palembang-Darussalam Sultanate will be replaced by that of Papua’s fourth governor Frans Kaisiepo on the Rp 10,000 banknote. The portraits of founding fathers Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta will remain on the Rp 100,000 banknote. — JP
