urakarta administration in Central Java plans to make new, more scientific signs for hundreds of heritage buildings in the city because the old signs were made without proper research by the Expert Heritage Team (TACB).

“The 2010 Law on heritage says signs must be preceded by research from the TACB. When we did the signage, the TACB did not exist,” said Agus Djoko Witiarso, the head of Spatial Planning Agency, on Friday.

Agus said that since 2012 they had identified 170 heritage objects. Signage was in the form of a monument, granite or copper plate, to identify them as heritage sites.

“Everything has to be studied and given new signs. The team will make recommendations whether a building is a heritage site or not,” Agus said.

TACB coordinator Titis Srimuda Pitana said signs would take into account historical value, archeological value, age and knowledge value of each building or heritage area.

“We will revoke heritage signs if we find a building that doesn’t meet the criteria,” she went on.

She said the team planned to study five buildings or heritage areas every week.

TACB member, Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Haryo (KGPH) Dipo Kusumo, said hundreds of heritage buildings in Surakarta were in poor condition. Many of them are owned by private individuals.

“Some of the dilapidated buildings are icons of Surakarta like Mangkunegaran Palace, which has been undergoing repairs, Keraton Surakarta, and Solo Great Mosque, and dozens of buildings in Kampung Batik Laweyan heritage area. (evi)
