akarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama and Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat on Wednesday registered themselves as running mates for the Jakarta gubernatorial election at the Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPU Jakarta) on Wednesday.
Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri accompanied the pair to the KPU Jakarta office.
“Alhamdulillah (thank God), we have just officially witnessed the PDI-P, Golkar, Hanura, and Nasdem submit the registration form to Jakarta General Election Commission,” Megawati said, adding that all needed documents had been submitted, except, the candidates' statements on their vision, mission and programs for the long-term development of the capital.
Ahok also thanked Golkar, Hanura, NasDem and the PDI-P for entrusting him and Djarot the parties' ticket.
He expressed the hope that the racial issue would not be raised prior to the election on Feb. 15.
“If we succeed in the election, it means we are more developed than the United States, which has just accepted diversity after 200 years,” said Ahok, who is a Christian and Chinese-Indonesian.
Meanwhile, KPU Jakarta chairman Sumarno said his institution Ahok and Djarot until Sept. 23 to complete their registration documents.
The commission will check on the candidates up to Sept. 29 and any revisions of the documents, would be implemented from Oct. 1 to 4, Sumarno said. (bbn)
