est Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan said Wednesday the provincial administration has sent aid to Garut and Sumedang regencies for the victims of flash floods and landslides that killed at least 24 by Wednesday at 5 p.m.
“We have handled the disaster; we have evacuated the site, established shelters and sent help,” said Heryawan in Bandung, the provincial capital.
Heryawan said West Java has been sending the aid since Tuesday night.
“A search and rescue team has been searching for victims and found some. We have acted swiftly. What is difficult is to prevent [another disaster]. We hope it would not happen again,” said Heryawan as quoted by Antara News.
Previously, the authority reported 15 dead and 18 missing in Garut and five deaths in the Sumedang landslides.
The affected areas in Garut regency are Bayongbong, Garut Kota, Banyuresmi, Tarogong Kaler, Tarogong Kidul, Karang Pawitan, and Samarang districts.
The flooding was caused by the overflowing Cimanuk River after heavy rains on Tuesday. (evi)
