T

he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has urged regional head candidates to submit official wealth report forms to the anti-graft body, a move it dubs one of the methods to maintain transparency.

“Transparency has to be done to uphold integrity as a positive political will for the benefit of the public. That is the consequence of being a regional head,” KPK chairman Agus Rahardjo said in a press statement in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Starting Wednesday, he said, the KPK opened special counters to handle wealth report submissions from regional head candidates who wanted to participate in next year’s election. The counters will be available until Oct. 3, he added.

Simultaneous regional head elections are set to kick off in 101 regencies, municipalities and provinces in February next year.  The General Elections Commission (KPU) offices in those regions have opened the registration of regional head candidates from Sept. 21 to Sept. 23.

Agus also encouraged all Indonesian people to monitor the election process of regional heads in their regions because during the period of 2004-2016, the KPK had handled at least 63 corruption cases involving 52 regents and 11 governors. He said 30 out of the 63 cases were bribery.

Wealth reporting should be taken to avoid corruption practices from growing further because regional heads are expected to improve the welfare of local communities, Agus said. (wnd/ebf)
