AS, 15, a second-year student at state vocational school SMKN 2 Makassar, South Sulawesi, was announced guilty of assaulting his teacher after a closed trial at the Makassar District Court on Wednesday.

The court’s sole judge Teguh Sri Raharjo sentenced MAS to a one-year rehabilitation at social education institution LPKS Marsudi Putra Toddopuli Salodong in Makassar.

In his ruling, Teguh said MAS was proven guilty of violating Article 170 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) on attacking or injuring other people, in which together with his father, Adnan Achmad, the student attacked Dasrul, 52, his teacher at SMKN 2 Makassar.

The judge considered the defendant’s act as negative and showed no respect to his teacher, which later sparked concern within the community.

However, he was imposed with social rehabilitation only because he was still underage and acted politely during his trial. “The defendant must attend rehabilitation at LPKS Marsudi Putra Toddopuli Salodong for one year,” said Teguh. He also asked that the defendant be immediately taken out from the state detention facility he had been held at.

Earlier, a panel of judges attempted to mediate a settlement of the case out of court. Initially, Dasrul forgave MAS and agreed to make peace with his former student. Two days after, however, he decided to continue the legal case through court.

Prosecutor Rustiani Muin immediately filed an appeal saying the verdict was lighter from what she demanded. In a trial on Tuesday, she asked the court judge to sentence MAS to 18 months in prison.

MAS’s lawyer Abdul Gafur said he would first consider whether or not he would file an appeal. However, he said he was very disappointed with the judge’s ruling. (ebf)
