P

olitical analyst from Charta Politika Yunarto Wijaya says the candidacy of Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono and Anies Baswedan will create a better election climate in Jakarta as both of them tend to not raise racial and religious issues.

"With figures like Agus and Anies, sectarian issues will not be as prominent as they would be with other candidates running in the election. Agus and Anies will not use religious and racial issues," Yunarto told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

The three pairs that will take part in the Jakarta gubernatorial elections are Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama-Djarot Saiful Hidayat, Anies Baswedan-Sandiaga Uno and Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono-Sylviana Murni.

The three pairs of candidates, instead, will primarily fight to win the votes of young people, he added." Sectarianism will still exist but it will not be a dominant issue", Yunarto said.

He added that to maintain a harmonious atmosphere during the campaign and election, the government should consistently enforce the law on anyone taking part in a smear campaign. (bbn)
