T

he Gerindra and Prosperous Justice (PKS) parties have officially endorsed former national education and culture minister Anies Baswedan and businessman Sandiaga Uno for the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election.

The declaration was made on Friday evening at the house of Gerindra chairman Prabowo Subianto in South Jakarta.

"After a long discussion, we’ve decided to nominate Anies Rasyid Baswedan to be the Jakarta gubernatorial candidate for 2017 and 2022. We nominate Sandiaga Uno as Jakarta deputy governor candidate," Prabowo said.

The PKS and Gerindra were the last parties to endorse gubernatorial candidates.

Earlier on Friday morning, the United Development Party (PPP), National Awakening Party (PKB), Democratic Party and National Mandate Party (PAN) at a meeting in the house of Dems chairman Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Cikeas, West Java, decided to endorse Agus Harimurti and the Jakarta governor's assistant for tourism Sylviana Murni in the election. The declaration marked a split in the so-called Kinship Coalition.

On Tuesday, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle declared its support for Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama and Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat in the election. There will, therefore, be three pairs of candidates in the 2017 election. (bbn)
