akarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama has criticized his opponent Anies Baswedan for promising to grant residents land that they have occupied for more than 20 years.

“Candidates usually don’t understand the data on land. I want to tell pak Anies to send his campaign team to collect the data from us. He shouldn’t be deceived by his campaign chief with false data,” Ahok said at City Hall on Tuesday.

Anies signed “a political contract” with the residents of Tanah Merah in North Jakarta on Sunday. In the contract, the residents are promised ownership of the land they have occupied for over 20 years. They will be granted land rights in accordance with existing regulations.

He also promised to revive kampung deret (elevated villages) in slum areas instead of evicting residents. The idea of kampung deret was first promoted by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Ahok when they campaigned together in the 2012 Jakarta gubernatorial election. But after Jokowi moved to the State Palace in 2014, Ahok canceled the plan and decided to move the residents to low-cost apartments.

Anies said pursuing kampung deret was a better idea than relocation to low-cost apartments because the livelihoods of the residents would be maintained, the residents would not be sent away from their places of work and their children could still go to nearby schools.

“If I am elected on Feb. 15, the contract will be implemented,” Anies said as quoted by kompas.com. (bbn)
