tate-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai office has reported a significant increase in passengers arriving at and departing from the sole international airport in Bali.

As of September, or three quarters of the way through 2016, the Ngurah Rai airport has served 14.8 million passengers.

“Compared to the same period last year, there has been a significant increase. In September last year, we served 12.7 million passengers, while this year we have [so far] reached 14.8 million, showing a 16 percent increase,” Ngurah Rai Airport general manager Yanus Suprayogi said on Thursday.

He said that of that number the proportion of domestic and international passengers was relatively equal, reaching 7.4 million each. “In the last four years, passenger growth in 2016 has been the highest,” said Yanus.

Apart from the number of passengers, increases have also been recorded in the airport’s cargo, both inbound and outbound, and flight movements. The number of goods transported by Ngurah Rai’s cargo service has increased significantly, reaching more than 30,000 tons in the third semester of this year, up by 39 percent from the same period in 2015. Meanwhile, the number of flight movements increased by 10 percent to 103,000.

“We are optimistic that until the end of this year, the number of passengers, cargo and flight movements will continue to increase,” said Yanus. (ebf)
