ity-owned bus management PT Transportation Jakarta (Transjakarta) has purchased 300 lower deck buses but most of them cannot operate in Jakarta because their fuel qualification needs to be downgraded from Euro 6 diesel to Euro 3 or 4.
The bus's engine, made in Sweden, originally could only run on Euro 6 diesel, the most refined and environmentally friendly fuel, but in Jakarta there is only Euro 3 fuel.
Transjakarta CEO Budi Kaliwono said the city only has three of the buses while eight more buses would arrive in November and 25 more would arrive in December.
“The producers need to modify the buses before they arrive in Jakarta. In January, there will be an additional 25 buses and the rest of the shipment will arrive gradually over the following six months,” said Budi in Jakarta on Sunday as reported by kompas.com.
The buses are accessible for people with disabilities because the height of the bus floor is similar to the height of sidewalks. The buses cost Rp 2.3 billion (US$ 177,367) each.
Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama said on Oct. 3 that the buses would replace the old Kopaja, Metromini and Kopami buses. “We will replace the old buses so the new buses will be accessible for people with disabilities,” he added. (bbn)
