search for victims of a collapsed bridge connecting Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan in Klungkung regency, Bali, was called off on Monday.
National Agency for Disaster Mitigation (BNPB) spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said Monday that the decision was made after the agency’s local office consulted with the Klungkung regent, the police, village heads and relevant local authorities.
“There have been no reports of missing victims by relatives. Therefore, we have stopped the search as of today,” Sutopo said.
“All the victims’ bodies have been taken care of by their families. All injured victims have returned to their homes and all motorcycles have been removed from the water,” he said.
The Yellow Bridge collapsed on Sunday at 6:30 p.m., when it was packed with Hindu adherents riding their motorcycles home from the nearby Bakung Temple, where they had conducted a ceremony in observance of Nyepi Segara.
Due to poor maintenance and overloading, some of the bridge’s suspension cables snapped and the bridge collapsed, killing six adults and two children and injuring 34 others, mostly from around Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida.
The bridge, with a length of 140 meters and a width of 1.2 meters, was built in 1995. The bridge was designed only for pedestrians, but due to difficult access, many locals drove across the bridge on motorcycles. (evi)
