T

he National Police officially handed over a case dossier regarding Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama’s alleged blasphemy to prosecutors at the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, on Friday morning.

“We have completed our investigation and have finished the governor’s case dossier. We handed over the dossier to the AGO, which has shown its readiness to handle sensitive cases like this," National Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said at a press conference on Friday.

Ahok's case dossier consists of 826 pages. It includes a list of 16 pieces of evidence, including the police’s investigation report on video footage of Ahok’s allegedly blasphemous speech in Thousand Islands on Sept. 27.

The dossier also contains testimonies from 12 people who have denounced Ahok, five eyewitnesses, 12 experts, six witnesses and six other experts presented by Ahok during interrogations, and Ahok himself.

The police named Ahok a suspect for blasphemy on Nov. 16. They charged the governor with violating Article 156 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) on blasphemy, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

His allegedly blasphemous speech ignited anger among some Muslim groups, who staged a large-scale rally on Nov. 4 in the capital despite Ahok's apologies. (ebf)
