N

ational Police Chief Gen. Tito Karnavian said on Tuesday the police would seek a safe venue for the trial of Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama over blasphemy charges.

“We will search for a safer place and one far from economic centers,” Tito said as reported by kompas.com.

The Attorney General's Office earlier announced that the trial would be conducted at the North Jakarta District but since the court’s building was under renovation, it would instead use the former building of the Central Jakarta District Court on Jl. Gajah Mada, Central Jakarta.

Tito said the use of the former building for the trial, which will start next week, would be temporary.

“It’s temporary on Jl. Gajah Mada. We think it's another [location] that we can safeguard easily,” he said.

Jl. Gajah Mada is located near the Presidential Palace and business and entertainment areas in Glodok, West Jakarta.

Tito told the House of Representatives on Monday that the police had spent a total of Rp 76 billion (US$5.8 million) to safeguard the anti-Ahok rallies on Nov. 4 and on Friday, both of which were joined by hundreds of thousands of people. (jun)
