akarta gubernatorial candidate Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono has said he would mitigate flooding in the city by improving water management, especially by expanding waterways and building more reservoirs in some areas.

During a campaign visit to Tegal Parang village, Mampang Prapatan, South Jakarta, on Wednesday, Agus, the son of former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, said that he realized the waterways in some areas were too narrow and the rivers in the city had become shallow.

"We need to improve water management. Actually, the rivers can retain water but we need to build more reservoirs so the water can be absorbed into the soil," Agus told reporters.

Agus who has resigned from the army with a rank of major, also said that he would continue to remind residents to keep the waterways clean to prevent flooding.

Further, Agus, who is currently the front-runner according to some polls, said his team would present detailed plans regarding the improvement of water management in the capital.

"We will come up with the best solution in mitigating flooding by engaging with residents, because they are the people who have been dealing with flooding for years," he said.

Agus is paired with the city’s deputy governor for tourism affairs Sylviana Murni for the gubernatorial election slated for February next year. The pair was nominated by the Democratic Party, the National Awakening Party, the United Development Party and the National Mandate Party. (jun)
