resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has instructed relevant government institutions to support the rescue efforts in Aceh after an earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale hit the province's northeastern areas on Wednesday morning.

“I have instructed government institutions to carry out an [evacuation],” the President said on Wednesday.

The President said he had also instructed Presidential Chief of Staff Teten Masduki to immediately fly to Aceh to closely monitor the situation.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has reported that the center of the quake, which occurred shortly after ‪5 a.m. local time, was 18 kilometers northeast of Pidie Jaya regency at a depth of 10 km.

The quake reportedly claimed at least 25 lives and injured hundreds of people.

On Dec. 26, 2004, an earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter scale triggered tsunami waves that hit Aceh and killed more than 120,000 people. (hwa)
