A

n unidentified man who allegedly attacked students at a state elementary school in West Sabu district, Sabu Raijua, East Nusa Tenggara, on Tuesday, wounding seven students, was allegedly beaten to death by residents.

“Seven students sustained stabbed wounds in the attack,” West Sabu Police chief Com. Silfeston said.

Silfeston said the wounded students were being treated at Seba General Hospital.

He said the alleged perpetrator was detained by residents after the attack, which occurred at 9 a.m. and handed him over to the police.

The motive behind the attack is unclear.

Two hours later, thousands of residents gathered outside the West Sabu Police, where they allegedly beat the suspect to death. Police officers were reportedly outnumbered.

The perpetrator is reportedly a resident of Bekasi, West Java.

Separately, Timor Evangelical Church (GMIT) chairperson Merry Kolimon deplored the attack against the children, urging the government to investigate the attack.

“Violence against children is a crime against humanity,” Merry said.

However, Merry called on residents to remain calm and uphold tolerance among different faiths on Sabu Island. (jun)
