T

he police arrested a resident of Tegalrejo Regency in Central Java, a failed legislative candidate identified as Haris Fauzi, on Wednesday over an alleged attempt to bomb a local drugstore.

National Police Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Rikwanto said the attack was an act of personal revenge targeting a nearby Islamic boarding school, Ponpes API.

“He [Haris] was planning to damage the image of Ponpes API by bombing the drugstore located just across from the boarding school,” Rikwanto said in a statement on Thursday.

Rikwanto explained that Haris had a grudge against API leader Gus Yusuf for not supporting him when he ran as a legislative candidate with the National Awakening Party (PKB) and instead associating Haris with the now-defunct Indonesian Communist Party (PKI).

“By planning the attack, he [Haris] wanted people to avoid Ponpes API,” said Rikwanto.

The police are charging Haris under Article 7 of the 2002 Government Regulation in lieu of law, Perppu No. 1/2002, on terrorism. (jun)
