akarta Corruption Court has sentenced Xaveriandy Sutanto and his wife Memi to three and two-and-a-half years, respectively, in prison after finding them guilty of bribing former regional council (DPD) speaker Irman Gusman.

Presiding judge Nawawi Pamolango also ordered the couple, who own CV Semesta Berjaya, to pay Rp 50 million (US$ 3,712) in fines each or face an additional three months behind bars.

“[We] declare that the first defendant, Xaveriandy Sutanto, and the second defendant, Memi, are guilty for their roles in corruption practice,” said Nawawi, who chairs the panel of five judges, as quoted by Antara on Wednesday.

The verdicts are lower than that demanded by prosecutors, who sought three years and an additional Rp 100 million in fines for each defendant.

The two have been found guilty for violating corruption laws in bribing Irman with Rp 100 million to ask him to increase sugar import quota for their company in West Sumatra.

The case started in July when Memi contacted Irman and asked for his help to acquire a sugar import quota of 3,000 tons, as sugar prices in the region were high at time. Irman agreed to assist Memi if he received Rp 300 commission per kilogram. Imran then used his political influence to lobby Bulog president director Djarot Kusumayakti to award Memi's company the import quota. (fac/dmr)
