tate-owned electricity company PLN has established a new category for subscribers of 900-watt electricity who do not want to raise their status to 1,300 watts following a crackdown on undeserving subsidized electricity recipients.
PLN president director Sofyan Basir clarified that despite reports that the firm was increasing tariffs for 900-watt users, this would only apply to those customers of non-subsidized 900-watt electricity.
The tariffs for non-subsidized 900-watt users will increase in three phases throughout the year. For January, non-subsidized 900-watt users have been entered into the low-voltage household category, which will have to pay Rp 1,114.74 (8 US cents) per kilowatt hour (kWh) from around Rp 605 last month.

“What has been done is what we have been informing the public about for the past 10 months. We have informed all recipients of 900-watt electricity that do not deserve to be subsidized because they are not categorized as poor,” he said during a press conference on Friday.
Those who do not receive the subsidized electricity are those, for examples, who own boarding houses with many rooms that use 900 watts, or have rented houses that use 2x900 watts, Sofyan added.
The Energy Law stipulates that the central government and regional administrations must allocate subsidized electricity to poor households. Aside from the 900-watt subscribers, the subsidy also goes to 22.8 million subscribers with 450-watt electricity capacity. (bbn)
