T

he Banda Aceh search and rescue (SAR) team has deployed personnel to locate the whereabouts of two foreign tourists, who reportedly went missing late last year on the region’s remote islets.

Banda Aceh SAR head Suyatno was quoted by Antara as saying that his team were verifying reports that the tourists had been spotted on islets in Aceh Singkil regency.

Suyatno said the search efforts for the tourists, Yvan Ghislain Nico Meers, 36, a Belgian national, and Lina Kall, 31, a German national, had begun last Friday involving personnel from the Navy and police.

Simeulue SAR coordinator Rahmad Kenedy added that his personnel had checked seven islets in the area where the tourists were spotted.

"Our team are still validating information garnered from our sources in the field," he said.

The tourists reportedly entered Indonesia from Malaysia on Dec. 24. There is no available record of the pair having exited the country. They should have been in Frankfurt, Germany, on Jan. 1. (dmr)
