akarta gubernatorial candidates Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama and Anies Baswedan conveyed their visions and missions during the first official gubernatorial debate initiated by the Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPU Jakarta) on Friday.

Agus said a lot of Jakarta residents were afraid of the administration.

He also criticized the current administration for not fixing social disparity and economic problems or addressing the city’s woes like flooding, traffic congestion and waste.

Over the next five years, if elected, Agus said he would develop the economy and residents’ purchasing power, create more job opportunities as well as provide more assistance in education, health and public transportation.

"We want to achieve participatory and inclusive development. We want Jakarta to be a modern and excellent city but also humanist and to always have its characteristics," he said.

Meanwhile, Ahok said he would focus on reforming the bureaucracy.

"Our primary mission is to have a bureaucracy that will serve with a 'clean, transparent and professional' approach. Without those things, it is impossible for us to achieve social and economic programs," Ahok said.

Anies said he would create more jobs in the city and ensure that all students could enjoy educational facilities.

He also said he would focus on combating drug distribution in the city.

"Social and economic development won't have meaning if there is still a drug [problem]. We will combat drugs [in the city]," Anies said. (dan)
