recent survey shows 26.5 percent of respondents are still not sure which candidate pair they will choose in the Salatiga mayoral election on Feb.15.

The swing voters’ details obtained from the Media Survey Center Indonesia (MSCI) survey reveal the balanced power between two candidates, Yuliyanto-Muh.Haris and Agus Rudianto-Dance Ishak Palit, who both have chances to boost their electability, which is the main reason why many Salatiga residents remain undecided.

“Either of the two candidate pairs could win the Salatiga election. Moreover, the electability gap between the two pairs is not large. It will depend on how smart the candidate pairs play their strategies to gain support from swing voters,” MSCI research director Edy Sulistiawa said on Tuesday.

According to the national survey institution, which is based in Surabaya, East Java, the Salatiga mayoral election is a head-to-head fight between two mayor-deputy mayor candidate teams.

Edy said the favorable rating was only about a 10 percent difference, standing at 42.1 percent and 31.4 percent for Yuliyanto-Haris and Agus-Dance respectively.

The survey was conducted using a direct interview method and involved 1,500 respondents from 23 sub-districts and four districts in Salatiga.

“Our survey population demographics included participants 17 years or older or already married. We conducted our survey from Jan.16 to 21,” said Edy, adding that the survey’s margin of error was 2.53 percent. (ebf)
