T

he campaign team of two candidate pairs running in the regental election in Jepara, Central Java, has been accused of committing offenses.

Jepara Elections Supervisory Committee (Panwaslu) prevention and inter-organizational relations division head Muhammad Oliz said in Jepara on Tuesday the offenses committed by the campaign team varied, from the distribution of door prizes to the installment of campaign visual aids that exceeded the maximum limit.

The campaign team of candidate pair Ahmad Marzuqi-Dian Kristiandi was found to have distributed door prizes during a campaign event in Raguklampitan, Batealit district, Jepara, on Sunday.

“When for the second time, a campaign participant was called to the stage to accept a door prize, our district-level Elections Supervisory Committee member immediately got on the stage and told the campaign team that distributing door prizes during a campaign event is not allowed. They then stopped it,” said Oliz.

“The team claimed it was not aware that door prizes were among items prohibited for distribution during campaigning.”

Ahmad-Dian will compete head-to-head against Subroto-Nur Yahman in the election on Feb.15.

Oliz said committee’s move to prohibit door prizes was in line with Article 47a of General Elections Commission (KPU) Regulation No.12/2016, which stipulates that political parties, a coalition of political parties, candidate pairs and campaign teams are prohibited from giving door prizes in campaign activities.

On the campaign visual aids, Oliz said each candidate pair could increase the number of campaign visual aids by 150 percent from the maximum limit allowed by KPU. “Many candidates have breached the limit.” (ebf)
