P

resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has expressed hope that the light rail transit (LRT) projects in Jakarta and Palembang, South Sumatra, will be completed by 2018, ahead of the 2018 Asian Games.

"I would like to make sure that the construction will be completed on time in 2018 or in early 2019. We all know that we will host the 2018 Asian Games, a world-class sports event," he said during the opening of a closed-door meeting at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday.

Jokowi emphasized that it was important to keep tabs on the construction of the two LRT projects in order to ensure that any obstacle could be resolved in time.

"We must keep checking, checking again and again to see what the obstacles are in the field. Is it land acquisition, funding, or spatial issues surrounding supporting infrastructure?" he asked.

The construction of both LRT projects is expected to support the upcoming Asian Games.

The LRT in the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II International Airport in Palembang is expected to span 23 kilometers and pass through 13 stations. Meanwhile, the Jakarta LRT project will connect several arenas to be used for certain sports during the games. (bbn)
