After taking an official leave of absence for three months, during which he had to juggle between campaigning for reelection and defending himself in a blasphemy trial, incumbent Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama is expected to return to City Hall this weekend.
Acting governor Sumarsono, who took over for Ahok from Oct. 28 last year, said the Home Ministry, which oversaw the work of the country’s 34 governors, would allow Ahok to return to his job at City Hall.
“My term will expire soon and so far there won’t be another replacement,” said Sumarsono, who also served as the Home Ministry’s regional autonomy director general.
Sumarsono hinted that Ahok’s deputy, Djarot Saiful Hidayat, would also return to his position.
“[They will go back] as a team in complete formation,” he said.
Many have speculated that Ahok, who is currently standing trial for blasphemy, would be suspended from his position as governor after completing his leave of absence and that Djarot would be appointed acting governor.
Another official from the Home Ministry confirmed that Ahok would immediately return to City Hall pending a decision from Home Minister Tjahjo Kumolo who will discuss Ahok’s fate with the ministry’s legal division.
“As the [home] minister has said, Ahok’s position as governor will be decided by the prison term demanded by prosecutors [in his blasphemy trial],” Home Ministry spokesman Dodi Riatmaji said.
Dodi said the ministry could only make a decision regarding Ahok’s future after prosecutors had decided which articles in the Criminal Code (KUHP) would be used to determine a prison term for Ahok.
Ahok, a Christian and a Chinese-Indonesian, angered Muslim groups after citing a verse in the Quran during an official visit to Thousand Islands regency in late September last year. Many Muslim leaders consider the remarks to have been blasphemous.
The police have charged Ahok with Article 156 (a) of the KUHP on blasphemy, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. He was also charged with Article 156 on hate speech, which carries a maximum penalty of four years in prison.
“As he was charged [by the police], it is a dilemma for us. Therefore, we need to deliberate this more thoroughly with our legal department,” Dodi said.
Law No. 23/2014 on regional administrations stipulates that regional leaders will be suspended from their positions if he or she is a defendant in a trial for offenses punishable by a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
“So the minister has decided to wait for the prosecutors. If the sentence demand is more than five years, we will immediately suspend him from his position,” he said.

While waiting for the prosecutors to come up with their sentence demand, Dodi said Ahok could return to his position.
Separately, Ahok said he had prepared himself to return to his job as governor and that he would take back control of the city administration the way he had done so for two years before taking his leave of absence.
Ahok said the first thing that he would look into would be the performance of civil servants.
“On the first day I will look at the performance indicators of civil servants. Those who are lazy will be demoted and those who show good performance will be promoted,” Ahok said on the sidelines of a political rally in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta, on Monday.
