arthquake tremors measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale jolted some areas of North Sumatra after midnight on Wednesday, causing panic and fear among residents.
"We were working on the fourth floor when the earthquake struck. It was strong. We went downstairs and waited in a safe area in a park," said Kompas Gramedia Group employee P Ginting in Medan on Tuesday.
"I thought someone had kicked my bed. I woke up and realized that it was an earthquake," Siti Munawaroh, a Medan resident, said.
Edison Kurniawan, the head of Medan branch of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), said in a statement that the tectonic earthquake was 10 kilometers deep and centered 22 kilometers southwest of Deliserdang regency.
"According to ShakeMap analysis and information from residents, the earthquake struck areas in Medan, Brastagi, Tuntungan, Binjai and Sibolangit," Edison said.
"We hope people along the coastal areas of North Sumatra will stay calm and follow the instructions from the BMKG. No tsunami threats have been reported," he added.
No casualties were reported in the incident.

Earthquakes have frequently struck North Sumatra since January. This situation has worried residents.
"I am worried about my son who is on a camping trip in Sibolangit until Friday. I hope he and his friends are doing alright. I pray for their safety," a Medan resident, Ani Ramadhani, said. (trw)
